Tory Burch’s Fall/Winter 2025 collection took a fresh and inventive approach to American sportswear, blending the classics with an experimental edge. Inspired by the idea of "twisted American sportswear," Burch redefined wardrobe staples by reimagining them with unexpected details and luxurious fabrics, all while maintaining a strong sense of wearability. This season, she asks women to redefine "classic" for themselves, with garments that feel both timeless and thoroughly modern.

The silhouettes in Burch’s collection were anything but predictable. Traditional sportswear shapes were given bold updates, sometimes literally twisted or restructured. Banker shirts, a signature of American prep, were transformed with exaggerated cuffs that flared dramatically, while cardigans were sliced, twisted, and pinned at the shoulder for a layered, asymmetrical look. Shirtdresses, constructed on a spiral pattern, hugged the body in an unexpected, sculptural way, merging comfort with a high-fashion sensibility. These shapes felt fresh yet familiar, capturing a sense of ease while pushing traditional boundaries.

Burch’s use of fabrication was particularly striking, blending luxurious materials in ways that defied expectation. A cut-out dress made of corduroy had a sculptural quality, while a quarter-zip fleece was crafted from needle-punched wool, playing on textures in a way that felt tactile yet refined. The trompe l’oeil knit dress, adorned with sequins, created the illusion of tweed, subverting the expected. Sweatpants and rugby shirts in plush Japanese brushed jerseys added to the relaxed feel, offering an elevated take on loungewear. Fabrics were deliberately aged and worn-in to feel like pieces collected over time—brushed alpaca, fraying tweed, and wrinkled velvet threaded with metal all conveyed a sense of history and lived-in luxury.

The handbags were another standout of the collection, showcasing Burch’s signature mix of comfort and elegance. Soft, pillowy leather was used for the Pierced and Balloon bags, crafted from the same luxurious leathers typically reserved for shoes. The Eleanor bag was deconstructed and reimagined with soft, puffy leather, adding a modern twist to a classic silhouette, while the Romy bucket bag in cognac suede and faux croc exuded sophistication and playfulness.

Footwear took a similarly off-kilter approach. The Twisted Pump, a returning favourite, was updated with distorted T-strap and slingback sandals. New riding boots and monk straps were given super-elongated, pointed toes, adding a quirky, futuristic element to the collection that contrasted with the otherwise grounded, laid-back mood.

Jewelry and accessories injected a touch of ‘70s glitz into the collection, enhancing its relaxed but glamorous vibe. Shoulder-dusting chains and watch band bracelets added a vintage flair, while gold-tone sunglasses gave off a cool, retro feel. Tiny mouse earrings, continuing Burch’s recent whimsical animal motifs, added a playful touch to the collection. Oversized pins were attached to sweaters and coats, while crystal flower brooches adorned sandals, adding a dash of sparkle and whimsy.

The show, set against the backdrop of The Museum of Modern Art, was a celebration of this mix of relaxed yet elevated luxury. The music, produced by Wladimir Schall, included tracks like "Haha" by Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul, "Magic Carillon" by Rose, and "Hot on the Heels of Love" by Throbbing Gristle. The eclectic soundtrack added an unexpected layer of depth, mirroring the collection’s bold approach to reinterpreting American sportswear classics.

Tory Burch’s Fall/Winter 2025 collection proved that the classic American wardrobe isn’t static—it’s evolving, redefined by the women who wear it. With a playful yet sophisticated take on sportswear, Burch’s designs are wearable, luxurious, and above all, timeless.
