After the bustling excitement of the Cannes Lions Festival, we were eager to embrace a more serene and immersive experience in Rome. Our journey began with a scenic train ride from Napoli, offering breathtaking vistas of the Italian countryside bathed in the enchanting light of the solstice strawberry moon. This picturesque start perfectly set the stage for an unforgettable adventure.
Upon arriving in Rome, we sought the guidance of Alexander Mariotti. Known for his unique blend of British and Roman heritage and his esteemed work on the History Channel and BBC, Mariotti is renowned for revealing Rome’s hidden gems to discerning high-profile clients. With just 48 hours to explore the city, his expert advice proved invaluable.
Alexander recommended Trattoria La Rosetta, a distinguished dining spot on Via della Rosetta. Set in the heart of ancient Rome, steps from the majestic Pantheon, this restaurant is led by Massimo Riccioli, a passionate second-generation owner and chef.
Upon entering Trattoria La Rosetta, we were immediately struck by its sophisticated and tasteful decor. The interior is adorned with warm wooden accents and refined elements, creating an inviting yet elegant atmosphere. A particularly captivating touch is the array of seafood elegantly presented on a bed of ice next to Massimo's open kitchen, adding a distinct character to the space.
Adding to this, the restaurant features a hand-painted portrait of Massimo in his chef’s attire, proudly displayed near a strikingly similar picture of his father. These portraits celebrate the restaurant’s rich family heritage and convey a deep connection to its origins.
Riccioli, the dedicated second-generation owner and chef, is not only the heir to this legacy of tradition and history but carries a deep respect for his Sicilian roots, reinterpreting the concept of a trattoria, by blending it with the sophistication of haute cuisine. His culinary philosophy is grounded in the careful selection of raw materials, ensuring that every dish bursts with authentic flavours reminiscent of the past.
A true pioneer in Roman cuisine, Massimo made his mark by introducing oysters to the city in the 1980s with the capital’s first Oyster Bar. His contributions to the culinary scene don’t stop there; his commitment to sustainability shines through as he makes use of every part of the product, elevating less noble fish to starring roles in his kitchen. This philosophy and his lasting impact on Roman cuisine make La Rosetta a stand-out option for those seeking both tradition and innovation.
Our lunchtime experience commenced with a stunning tasting menu curated and cooked by Massimo himself just for us. This included a vibrant assortment of glistening shrimp, delectable oysters, tender calamari, and other exquisite catches, showcasing his commitment to using the finest ingredients.
The calamari was perfectly tender and encased in a crisp, golden-brown crust that added a satisfying contrast. A hint of zesty lemon elevated the dish, while a fresh, crisp salad and the accompaniment of delicate grey mullet roe created a harmonious blend of flavours and textures.
Next, we enjoyed a refreshing pink shrimp ceviche. The prawns, impeccably fresh and tender, were paired with bright, tangy mango and subtly briny seaweed. This dish offered a delightful burst of contrasting tastes that danced on the palate, leaving a lingering impression of freshness and finesse.
The highlight of the meal was the squid ink pasta. Made fresh from the kitchen and straight to the plate. The spaghetti was strikingly black, with a rich, umami-packed sauce, perfectly captured the essence of the Italian ocean. This dish encapsulated the spirit of Trattoria La Rosetta, where Massimo’s culinary philosophy and contributions to Roman cuisine truly shine.
To accompany our meal, the in-house sommelier presented a selection of superb wines. The Grande Cuvee Bellavista Alma Brut from Franciacorta was a sparkling delight, its crisp, effervescent quality adding a touch of sophistication. Another standout was a distinctive wine from Mount Etna, known for its robust, earthy profile, which harmonised beautifully with the rich tastes of our dishes.
For dessert, we indulged in luxuriously creamy pistachio cannoli, elegantly presented on a bed of sugared syrup and decorated with fresh berries. This sweet finale provided a perfect conclusion to a meal that was both refined and memorable.
The highlight of our visit was Massimo’s personal touch. Throughout our meal, he made frequent appearances, sharing his warmth and passion for his craft. His genuine charm and dedication greatly enhanced the dining experience, making it truly special.
After our remarkable lunch, we took a leisurely stroll (just a stone's throw away) to Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. The grandeur of the Trevi Fountain, with its intricate Baroque sculptures and cascading waters, provided a magical end to our afternoon. The beauty of these historic sites, combined with the day’s warmth, was the ideal conclusion to our Roman exploration.
Trattoria La Rosetta is more than just a restaurant; it is a celebration of Roman culinary tradition and excellence. Its intimate, romantic atmosphere makes it an ideal choice for couples and anyone seeking a memorable meal. If you find yourself in Rome, don’t miss the opportunity to experience the enchanting culinary journey at this hidden gem, guided by the expert recommendations of Alexander Mariotti. This dining experience, set against the backdrop of Rome’s historic splendour, will linger in your memory long after your visit.
