In the heart of Rome’s bustling landscape, where grand monuments and lively piazzas dominate, lies a charming escape that offers a refreshing respite from the city's frenetic pace. Recommended by Alexander Mariotti, known for his unique blend of British and Roman heritage and his work on the History Channel and BBC, Osteria 44 offers a delightful and classic dining experience. Nestled on Via Aureliana 44, just behind the American Embassy, it stands apart from the usual tourist routes. This quaint and stylish eatery is a mere stroll from the famed Piazza Barberini and the Spanish Steps, making it a convenient yet serene spot for those seeking authentic Roman fare away from the crowds.
Upon arrival at Osteria 44, the warm and inviting atmosphere immediately captures your attention. The restaurant’s decor balances sophistication with comfort, providing a stylish backdrop that feels both welcoming and refined.
The true highlight of Osteria 44, however, is the exceptional service provided by waitress Margarita. With her impeccable Australian accent and genuine Roman hospitality, she is accompanied by owner Sergio. Margarita takes the time to understand your preferences and offer tailored recommendations, showcasing her detailed knowledge of the menu and passion for both food and wine, elevating the dining experience, and ensuring that each guest feels valued and well-cared-for.
Our culinary experience at Osteria 44 was nothing short of exceptional. We began with a bold red wine from Salento, specifically the Arementino, which perfectly complemented the flavours of our meal. The grilled seared octopus, paired with crusco pepper—also known as 'crispy pepper,' a variety cultivated in the Basilicata region since the 1600s and famous for its ancient recipe of Lucana di Picerno pork sausage predating the Roman Empire—and aromatic herb mayonnaise, was a highlight, offering a delightful combination of smoky and tangy notes.
The half-sleeved carbonara, made with organic eggs and DOP Brunelli pecorino cheese, was a rich and satisfying dish, showcasing the restaurant's dedication to quality ingredients. We also enjoyed a tender, succulent grilled beef fillet, accompanied by perfectly crisp, golden thin potatoes and generous lashings of earthy truffle, which added an indulgent and luxurious touch to the dish.
For dessert, we indulged in the famed tiramisu, served uniquely in a coffee cup and aptly dubbed the hot-cold tiramisu for its intriguing temperature contrast. We also savoured a beautiful ice cream, topped with soft cake and finished with red berries and fruit, providing a sweet and memorable conclusion to our meal.
In summary, Osteria 44 is a true culinary gem in Rome, offering a unique and charming escape from the city’s more tourist-heavy areas. With its classic ambience, exceptional service, and delectable dishes, it stands as a testament to the richness of Roman cuisine and hospitality. If you find yourself in Rome, don’t miss the opportunity to discover the delightful offerings of Osteria 44—an experience that will undoubtedly linger in your memory long after your visit.
