After a lengthy hiatus since our last visit to NIZUC—and fresh from the whirlwind of a demanding print deadline—we were eager to escape into a seamless, wellness-focused journey. Determined to make the trip as restorative as the destination itself, we meticulously curated every detail, including packing everything we needed in carry-on luggage. By ensuring relaxation began the moment we left London, we set the perfect tone for our return to this tranquil paradise.
Getting There
Our journey began with Blacklane, the epitome of stylish global chauffeur services, as we were whisked away from East London in the sleek, all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS. The serene atmosphere was set with soothing classical music, while the onboard Wi-Fi kept us seamlessly connected. Our impeccably dressed chauffeur, in a sharp black-and-white suit, completed the picture of effortless elegance.
As we made our way to Heathrow, London’s busiest airport, the journey felt like an extension of the wellness experience we had envisioned. On arrival, we opted for the newly revamped No1 Lounge—a refreshing alternative after a string of underwhelming visits to the British Airways Lounge this year. Despite frequently flying business class, the so-called executive lounges often resembled bustling canteens rather than the tranquil retreats they promised. Long queues, uninspiring cuisine, a shortage of seating, and decor more reminiscent of a supermarket than a luxury lounge left us unimpressed. Determined to reclaim some control over our airport experience, we couldn’t resist taking a peek at the No1 Lounge—and what we found was a game-changer.
The No1 Lounge’s design resembled a luxury boutique hotel, offering private rooms and pre-allocated tables that created a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. The lounge’s carefully curated interiors, featuring elegant panelling, dramatic lighting, and lush greenery, seamlessly blend comfort with understated luxury. It was a sanctuary from the usual airport chaos, setting the tone for the indulgent journey we had planned. We sipped champagne while perusing chic fashion books and watching planes take off. This will certainly be our lounge of choice for future travels.
Upon landing at Cancun Airport, we were met by the impeccable team from Airssist, whose attention to detail made the start of our journey feel effortlessly luxurious. Our chauffeur greeted us warmly and escorted us to a sleek, air-conditioned luxury SUV. As we settled into the plush leather seats, the smooth drive offered a moment of calm, complemented by chilled refreshments and a curated playlist that perfectly set the mood. The service was flawless, ensuring we arrived at our destination refreshed and relaxed, with every detail of the transfer handled seamlessly.
NIZUC Resort & Spa: A Return to Paradise
As we pulled up to NIZUC Resort & Spa, it felt like returning to an old friend—familiar yet somehow even more enchanting. Few destinations leave an imprint on the soul like this iconic haven on the edge of Cancun. Its effortless blend of natural beauty, architectural finesse, and culinary mastery reminded us why NIZUC has earned its place as an unparalleled escape. The resort’s evolution since our last visit was evident, radiating an even greater sense of elegance and inspiration, making this return all the more unforgettable.
From the moment we arrived, the experience felt deeply personal. Awaiting us in our suite—a serene sanctuary with a plunge pool overlooking both the verdant jungle and shimmering ocean—was a thoughtful collection of welcome gifts. Among them, a bespoke book celebrating NIZUC’s anniversary and a cookbook curated by Executive Chef Sylvain Desbois hinted at the gastronomic journey ahead. Fresh tropical fruit, artisanal chocolate crafted by the pâtisserie team, and the resort’s exclusive wine—produced from their private vineyard—added an unmistakable touch of indulgence. It was evident from our arrival that this would be an elevated experience. Having visited previously during the pandemic, even then, the experience was unparalleled.
The suite embodied the effortless luxury we remembered, with a few advantageous differences this time. No longer limited by pandemic restrictions, we enjoyed the luxury of staying in the residence buildings, nestled away from the lobby. Our suite was located in the Chechén building, named after the legendary Maya tale of the Chenchen and Chaca trees. According to the story, two warrior brothers, both deeply in love with the same woman, Nicté-Ha, fought a deadly battle. As they lay dying, they asked the gods for forgiveness and to protect Nicté-Ha. Moved by their plea, the gods transformed the brothers into trees.
The suite boasts earthy tones, sleek modern accents, and floor-to-ceiling windows inviting the golden light of the Mexican Caribbean; it was a space designed for both relaxation and inspiration. The private plunge pool became our go-to retreat, the perfect vantage point to soak in the interplay of jungle greens and ocean blues.
Awakening the Senses
As we settled into our luxurious suite, the promise of relaxation and wellness awaited at every corner of the resort, beginning with an invigorating paddleboard yoga session. Balancing atop the tranquil Caribbean waters, surrounded by nothing but sea and sky, offering a rare blend of serenity and exhilaration.
This sense of connection extends to the renowned NIZUC Spa by ESPA, the first ESPA-branded spa in the Mexican Caribbean. This makes the experience uniquely special, one that few are fortunate enough to enjoy. Mayan culture is intricately woven into every element of this sanctuary, particularly in its treatments.
On this visit, we indulged in hydrotherapy unlike any other. The experience began with a soothing steam room and shower, followed by another round of steam infused with rich oils and scrubs to awaken the senses and open the chakras. Next, a cold plunge basket energised us, invigorating both body and mind. We then made our way to the hydrotherapy pools, where the calming waters further relaxed our muscles. The treatment continued with a head massage in a chair designed for ultimate relaxation, relieving any lingering tension.
The finale was a full-body massage, set against the resort's dreamy surroundings, which left us feeling completely renewed. It was a moment that felt almost transcendental.
Culinary Mastery Across Continents
Dining at NIZUC is a journey in itself, one that transcends borders and expectations. It's not only a haven for relaxation but also a culinary destination where world-class gastronomy takes centre stage. The resort’s six restaurants, helmed by a team of international chefs under the leadership of Executive Chef Sylvain Desbois, deliver an extraordinary range of global flavours infused with a distinctive Mexican twist.
The experience began with a culinary highlight at La Punta Grill. Seated under the open sky, we savoured steaks cooked on Himalayan sea salt and oysters so fresh they seemed to give a whisper of the ocean. Each bite was a revelation, a perfect balance of robust flavours and delicate textures.
At Terra Nostra, the focus shifted to Mediterranean-inspired creations with a local twist. The Wagyu beef paired with roasted onion purée and grilled asparagus was exceptional, while the potato and olive oil emulsion, topped with sundried Iberian ham, exemplified the restaurant’s flair for combining simplicity with sophistication.
Mornings at Café de la Playa were pure decadence. This isn’t your typical breakfast buffet—this is an event. From flaky, golden pastries to indulgent smoked salmon and even lobster, every bite celebrated the art of morning dining.
Indochine offers a seamless fusion of Asian spices and fresh ingredients, bringing classic dishes from the Far East to life with modern culinary techniques. Set overlooking a strikingly lit reflective pool, the ambience here is equally decadent, enhancing the overall experience. The menu is an exciting exploration of bold, aromatic flavours, with cilantro, mango, and tamarind enlivening spicy Indonesian soups, Thai noodles, and sushi. We savoured standout dishes such as the Peking Duck, served in both traditional form and as crispy tostadas with fried wonton, spicy mayo, cucumber sunomono, and cilantro broth.
The black cod, glazed with sweet white miso and paired with bok choy and hajikami, was another highlight. Of course, the sushi and sashimi platters were a must-try, offering the freshest, most delicate cuts of fish. Every dish at Indochine is a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to creating a rich and indulgent dining experience.
The resort’s Peruvian-inspired restaurant, NI, brought the vibrant flavours of South America to life with an Asian twist on some of the dishes. The tuna tartare rolls were a revelation, combining crispy rice with tender tuna, cucumber, and a touch of tamarind for a flavour explosion. The classic ceviche, with its catch-of-the-day fish and tangy Leche de Tigre, was an ode to fresh, zesty perfection.
The Jewel of Mexican Gastronomy: Ramona
Our culinary exploration reached its zenith at Ramona, where a thoughtfully curated tasting menu took us on a journey through Mexico’s finest flavours.
Ramona, a contemporary celebration of traditional Mexican cuisine, was recently awarded the prestigious Cesar Balsa Excellence Award for Best Hotel Restaurant in Mexico by CANIRAC. The restaurant has clearly made a strong impression across LATAM, establishing itself as a leader in culinary innovation. With Michelin set to visit Mexico in 2025, we are both hopeful and confident that Ramona will be capturing attention and making a strong impression.
Guided by Executive Chef Sylvain Desbois and brought to life by Chef Irving Cupul, Ramona’s menu is a sensory journey through Mexico’s diverse culinary heritage. Chef Cupul, drawing inspiration from his travels and deep connection to local traditions, crafted a 12-course tasting menu that reimagines classic dishes with fresh, seasonal ingredients, artisanal produce, and sustainable seafood.
The dining experience is an enchanting interplay of flavours and storytelling. Highlights included the Kibi stuffed with Edam cheese and Chiltomate sauce, where the dish’s pumpkin shells and corn kernels delivered earthy, comforting notes. The blue corn taquito with Valladolid sausage paid homage to the cenotes of the Yucatan, with pebbles adorning the plate as a playful nod to nature.
Paired with a carefully curated selection of beverages—including locally produced wines and a refreshing organic cider—each course unfolded a narrative that deepened our appreciation for Mexico’s culinary artistry.
Ramona’s intimate, romantic atmosphere enhances the experience further. Illuminated by candlelight and adorned with gigantic vibrant floral arrangements, the restaurant feels both historic and timeless. Elements like the natural stone pavements, a historic Michoacán entrance, and a replica of an XVI-century Augustinian mural add to its enchanting allure.
The hotel also boasts a boutique offering luxury items for those who enjoy a bit of retail therapy. For a more indulgent experience, guests can partake in a tequila and mezcal tasting at the Havana Bar, where each spirit is paired with gourmet hors d'oeuvres. If, like us, you prefer to unwind in the evening, you can enjoy live Mexican music performed by a band and vocalist, all while savouring a premium cigar. With so much to do within the resort, leaving becomes a challenge. Whether you're travelling with children, who can make fresh pizzas and splash around in the pool at the kids' club, or seeking privacy as a couple or honeymooners, there are plenty of options. For those seeking tranquillity, the adults-only pool or beach areas provide the perfect escape, while private chefs can be arranged for intimate meals in your villa. The resort offers endless opportunities to create moments that will stay etched in your memory.
A Testament to Mayan Heritage
While the resort’s culinary offerings are a triumph, NIZUC’s connection to its Mayan roots is what sets it apart. The property stands on sacred land, once part of the Mayan civilisation. Architect Alejandro Escudero has honoured this heritage in every detail, from the hieroglyph-inspired patterns in the design to the use of natural materials that mirror the surrounding landscape.
Walking through the property feels like a journey through time. The Reflecting Pond at the entrance creates a sense of arrival that is almost spiritual, its still waters symbolising the resort’s ethos of balance and harmony. Inside, light and shadow play against the earthy tones, creating spaces that shift with the time of day, reflecting the rhythms of nature.
Immersed in Luxury, Rooted in Culture
NIZUC doesn’t just invite you to relax; it invites you to be present. Whether lounging by the infinity pools, exploring the lush mangroves, or simply sitting on the beach watching the sun sink into the horizon, the resort offers countless moments to savour.
Even as we immersed ourselves in its modern luxuries, the spirit of the Maya was ever-present—a reminder that this place is more than a destination; it’s a bridge between past and present.
As our stay came to an end, it was the little things that lingered. The warm smiles of the staff, the personalised touches in every interaction, and the sense that every detail—however small—had been designed with care.
Returning to NIZUC wasn’t merely a vacation; it was a rediscovery of luxury as it should be—meaningful, immersive, and rooted in culture. Here, time slows down, the mundane fades away, and every moment is an opportunity to reconnect—with nature, culture, and yourself.
For travellers seeking more than just a vacation, NIZUC offers an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. It’s a place where time slows down, where the mundane fades away, and where every moment is an opportunity to reconnect—with nature, with culture, and with yourself.
