The Maldives, an enchanting archipelago comprising approximately 1,200 idyllic islands, has long been synonymous with honeymooners, influencers, and affluent travellers. However, these Southeast Asian islands boast a rich tapestry of history, which we were fortunate enough to explore during our stay at the luxurious 5 star Cora Cora Maldives resort.
Getting to the Maldives is an adventure in itself, especially for those departing from the UK. After an international flight to Doha, another to the main island of Malé, and finally a breathtaking seaplane ride offering stunning views of the turquoise waters below, we were understandably exhausted. Yet, our fatigue vanished when we arrived at the resort's picturesque dock. We were warmly welcomed with Big Bang music by an incredibly diverse staff, hailing from Switzerland, India, Sri Lanka, and the native Maldivian islands. Their radiant smiles, gifts of vibrant mālā garlands, and the option to receive a temporary 'Freedom' tattoo welcomed us warmly. This harmonious welcome enhanced by breathtaking scenery instantly infused us with a newfound energy and excitement.
Background
Nestled on the Raa Atoll, Cora Cora (formerly Maamigili) stands out as one of the Maldives' oldest and most historically vibrant islands; it is one of the only luxury all-inclusive resorts in the Maldives. It's a paradise for divers and snorkelers, offering access to shimmering underwater worlds teeming with unique marine life. The island's rich history is as captivating as its natural beauty. Legend has it that a Sri Lankan prince and his wife once visited and were invited to stay as rulers. The Atolls' fascinating past is lovingly preserved at the hotel's Dutch Onion Museum and throughout the property. Visitors can discover treasures such as a centuries-old Qur'an, intricate pottery, and ancient fossils, all meticulously cared for by Ibrahim, a dedicated staff member from the Maldives. Ibrahim, born on the nearby island of Kandholhudhoo (also known as Tsunami Island), has deep ancestral connections to Raa Maamigili, now known as Cora Cora Maldives. As a child, he would visit the island during school holidays, spending his time playing football. The people of Kandholhudhoo frequently used Maamigili for collecting wood and coconuts, as well as docking and repairing their dhonis (traditional boat). The island was a vital resource and a well-used hub for the community.
Ibrahim's connection to the island is particularly poignant, making his return to Cora Cora Maldives a touching full-circle moment.
The Dutch Onion also boasts impressive ancient memorials dating back 500 years and two remarkable temple tanks believed to be around 900 years old. Be sure to explore the charming 120-year-old traditional Maldivian house, which vividly captures the essence of life on ‘Maamigili Island’ in the early 1900s.
Each surrounding island boasts its own distinctive charm, but Cora Cora (Maldives) stands out as the first Maldivian resort with a museum, offering visitors a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the Maldives' rich and captivating history. This intimate and exceptional experience provides a refreshing contrast to the often superficial or predictable image of the Maldives seen through influencers' lenses.
The Resort
The five-star resort boasts 100 stunning villas, ranging from beachside escapes to poolside retreats and lagoon views, with some even offering private plunge pools. But the visual feast doesn’t stop there. Whether you’re strolling or, like us, cycling around the resort, it feels like stepping straight into a storybook. Lush greenery, wildlife (including white rabbits) and a sprawling turquoise lagoon create a magical backdrop that’s nothing short of enchanting.
Staying in the Lagoon Villa, you'll find the perfect blend of coastal charm and minimalist design. The crisp white walls, adorned with local artwork and woven wicker accents, frame a grand four-poster bed that lets you wake up to or drift off with jaw-dropping views. The daily minibar is stocked with everything from snacks to bubbles to beer and soft drinks, and the coffee is so good you’ll swear it's brewed from ocean magic. The Cora Cora mug adds a personal touch, making you feel right at home.
The bathroom is a mini sanctuary with a double console, luxurious toiletries, and a separate annexe featuring a rainfall shower, a freestanding tub, and a hammock—perfect for a relaxing read.
With the Indian Ocean as your backyard, each morning begins with a burst of energy. Imagine starting your day with a snorkel in the world’s largest natural pool and swimming among some of the most extraordinary marine life. The view from your bungalow is so spectacular that no photo can do it justice. It’s a genuine home away from home, inviting you to slow down, soak up the beauty, and savour every moment.
Dining
As mentioned earlier, Cora Cora Maldives is an all-inclusive resort, but it stands out from any we’ve experienced before. The hotel features its own coffee and wellness smoothie station, ensuring a fresh start to each day. With four diverse restaurants, it caters to every palate—from picky eaters to carnivores and vegans alike—promising to tantalise every taste bud.
Ginger Moon
Women truly shine at the heart of this culinary experience, with Chef May leading her talented team in crafting mouthwatering dishes inspired by the vibrant street food of Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Korea. We were captivated by the stunning ocean backdrop and the open kitchen, which provided us with front-row seats to watch these incredible women prepare delectable creations. Highlights included the Pung Goong—a delightful deep-fried toast topped with minced prawns and accompanied by a luscious plum sauce. Another favourite was the irresistible Kai Tord, Thai-style crispy fried chicken wings drizzled with sweet chilli sauce, so delectable that we couldn’t resist ordering a second round. Other tantalising options include the zesty Thai-style fresh rolls and the hot and sour Tom Yum Goong.
Next on the list is the à la carte Italian restaurant, ACQUAPAZZA,where you can enjoy lunch, and dinner from an exquisite menu. Relish fresh risotto verde, savour artisanal charcuterie, or enjoy a perfectly baked pizza from the stone oven, all while unwinding with your all-inclusive premium beverage—such as the Champagne we delighted in.
For sushi enthusiasts, Teien is a must-visit. This chic spot, nestled within the lively buffet restaurant showcases a selection of fresh catch-of-the-day options, Teppanyaki, along with sushi and satay, ensuring a delightful experience for all.
Tazäa is the place to indulge in a breakfast fit for royalty. This restaurant also offers all-day dining, featuring an array of dishes inspired by the diverse islands of the Indian Ocean. Here, you can relish succulent shish kebabs, the freshest catch of the day, and the most delectable roti and naan we’ve ever tasted.
Wellness & Activities
The resort offers a delightful array of activities, from exhilarating jet skiing and vibrant snorkelling adventures to soothing yoga and calming meditation sessions. Engaging art classes and exciting excursions, such as private dolphin-watching tours and breathtaking sunset cruises, add to the variety. There’s truly something for everyone on this island, making it an all-encompassing paradise.
For those who prefer a more relaxed approach to marine life, you can observe sharks and other fascinating species right from your lagoon villa. We particularly relished a serene cruise around the stunningly beautiful ocean, where refreshing drinks and delectable canapés were served. Additionally, we indulged in a luxurious massage at the MOKSHA Spa, where the sea remains a mesmerising focal point. The spa features a captivating glass-bottom window that allows you to once again immerse yourself in the ocean’s enchanting wonders. We chose to unwind here before heading home, creating the perfect, tranquil conclusion to a truly magical getaway.
Cora Cora Maldives is rich with secrets and hidden treasures, leaving us with profound admiration for their commitment to wildlife conservation, species protection, and historical preservation. Their remarkable efforts in creating a distinctive, sustainable, and delightful experience are truly noteworthy. Before our visit, our understanding of the Maldives was shaped largely by influencer portrayals—picturesque white sands, turquoise waters, and a flurry of selfies. However, our time at Cora Cora Maldives revealed a depth and richness far beyond these surface impressions. We depart with a deep appreciation for what this exceptional resort offers and look forward to the opportunity to return.
