ARC Rooftop: Lewerentz's Legacy and Korean Fusion in Europe

Travel & Lifestyle

In 2023, Korean cuisine was ranked the most popular in the world, with global foodies showcasing its tantalising dishes across social media, including TikTok. Popular hashtags like #InstaKorean and #Korean food has trended widely, captivating audiences everywhere. For those lucky enough to experience authentic "Seoul Food" in Korea, returning home often means lowered expectations due to the difficulty of replicating the cuisine. However, Stockholm's ARC Rooftop (at Blique by Nobis) has changed the game, bringing Europe the authentic, delicious, and stylish Korean cuisine it has been craving, all in a setting designed to turn heads.

Opening in 2019 in the upscale neighbourhood of Hagastaden, known as the gallery district, the 1930s property originally designed by architect Sigurd Lewerentz was given a new lease on life by the renowned architects at Wingårdhs. Famous for their work at The National Museum in Stockholm and the Aquatic Centre in Kallbadhus Sölvesborg, Wingårdhs has revitalised the former warehouse with botanicals, striking artworks, and unique lighting. Paying homage to Lewerentz, the firm has masterfully elevated the building, merging its historic charm with modern sophistication. It’s no surprise that this transformation was executed with such flair, given Sweden's renowned design prowess.

The stunning rooftop, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offers unique views of Stockholm while serving a delightful Asian fusion sharing menu, an à la carte menu with pan-Asian dishes, and exquisite cocktails. The menu is crafted by Executive Head Chef Daniel Guest, who brings 27 years of experience in 3 Michelin star restaurants and training in Classical French, Italian, British, Swedish, and modern European cuisine. Trained at The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts under the late Michel Bourdin, Guest has meticulously curated an array of options to tantalise taste buds, creating a unique and masterfully crafted dining experience for visitors to the city.

The Korean Ssäm-style Sharing Menu (priced at 795 SEK per person) provides a generously served selection of unique dishes, where foodies can build their own tacos as the sun goes down or perhaps as we did indulge in the delicious Bao Buns.

Star dishes include the Tuna Ceviche arriving with floral yet bitter Sakura maru, sweet orange, and crunchy cucumber and fried rice noodles. This dish is a refreshing and vibrant start to the meal, showcasing the skill and creativity of the kitchen.

For flavour sensation check out the succulent and well-seasoned Szechuan pepper fried sirloin, although a sharing dish we were not in the sharing mood when it came to this option. The sirloin is perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of spice to create a memorable taste sensation. We washed our bites down with champagne and the restaurant's signature cocktail Bansho - an infusion of Shochu (like sake), vibrant passionfruit, pomegranate and lemon. It perfectly complements the meal, offering a refreshing and slightly tart balance to the rich flavours of the food.

Other delectable options include the surprisingly delightful Ork and Kimchi dumplings. These tasty morsels are served with scallions and crispy chilli oil, adding a satisfying crunch and a hint of heat. Accompanied by a soy and vinegar dipping sauce, the distinct flavours of the meaty ork are beautifully complemented by the umami profile of the kimchi. Each bite offers a harmonious blend of textures and tastes, making this dish a standout choice on the menu.

Each dish on the menu is a testament to Executive Head Chef Daniel Guest's dedication to excellence. With 27 years of experience in 3 Michelin-star restaurants and training in various culinary traditions, Chef Guest has meticulously crafted a dining experience that is both unique and unforgettable. His attention to detail and commitment to quality shine through in every bite.

Whether you are a seasoned foodie or a curious newcomer, the Korean Sharing Menu at ARC Rooftop promises an exceptional dining experience that will leave you longing for more. The combination of innovative dishes, stunning views, and impeccable service makes it a must-visit destination in Stockholm.
