We consider ourselves loyal patrons of the Aethos brand, having visited their enchanting Milan property several times. This exquisite luxury hotel group, with properties in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, exudes an alluring blend of refined elegance and escapism. Their uniquely designed and stunningly beautiful properties captivate devoted admirers, including passionate artisans, interior and architectural design aficionados, and discerning travellers seeking holistic experiences amidst breathtaking landscapes.
This year, the team unveiled a new haven on the picturesque island of Sardinia, renowned for its beautiful beaches, turquoise sea, fascinating rock formations, and mouthwatering cuisine.
The ancient geoformation island of Sardinia is not only filled with breathtaking visuals but also boasts fascinating facts. For instance, Sardinia is not earthquake-prone and features rocks dating back to the Palaeozoic Era, the earliest of three geological eras, which began around 542 million years ago. It's no wonder that sitting on these ancient rocks alone makes you feel deeply connected to the earth.
The island is also celebrated for its local seafood, Pane Carasau (flatbread), and was the stunning location for Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me. Stepping off the plane, you instantly feel the pressures of city life melt away, making it no surprise that Sardinia is one of the world's five Blue Zones, known for its high life expectancy. We couldn't wait to see what Aethos has done with their new property on this enchanting island.
Arriving in our chauffeur-driven Mercedes, we drove to the postcard-perfect Cannigione property in Costa Smeralda. AETHOS-emblazoned Land Rovers sat among olive trees and lanterns, while the main building showcased traditional Sardinian architecture. The structure featured local stonework, including a classic salmon Italian tetto (roof), along with granite and basalt—materials deeply rooted in the island's architectural heritage. The property exudes timeless charm, seamlessly blending with the natural landscape.
The lobby feels like a page from a luxurious Assouline travel book. We noticed the famed bookstore's Costa Smeralda edition sat neatly on a chic, truncated coffee table, surrounded by elegant white booth sofas, striking coral lamps, and vibrant floral arrangements.
True to Aethos' promise of ‘enhancing your body, mind, and soul’, they minimise travel hassles. Check-in is effortless, and handled before arrival on email. The attentive and friendly staff cater to your every need via WhatsApp, letting you and your loved one savour the experience intimately.
The rooms are gated casas and apartments, some boasting sea views, and rolling hill views whilst others feature plunge pools. They are a short walk from the main property, with drivers to escort you and your luggage in branded golf carts. The best part of Aethos Sardinia is not only the gorgeous view of the Bay of Cannigione but also the hidden gems throughout the property.
The interiors blend traditional Sardinian tiles with contemporary modern art and furnishings, allowing guests to immerse themselves in an authentic experience while enjoying modern design and technology. Bright white walls with wooden accents complement detailed cupboards, tables, Bauhaus-style furniture and Phaidon books.
The bathrooms in the Sea View suites feature a vast console stocked with every essential for a getaway, from sumptuous woods_Copenhagen toiletries to hairbrushes, combs, vanity sets, and bamboo toothbrushes. They’ve thoughtfully included everything a traveller might need, ensuring each suite is perfectly equipped. The jet-jacuzzi shower makes it difficult to leave the bathroom, and each features a small window revealing postcard-worthy views of the bay.
Sip on a freshly brewed espresso each morning on your private terrazza, complete with a luxurious sun lounger, while the birds serenade you—a moment so delightful we recorded the sounds to use as our alarm, taking a piece of Sardinia home with us. Returning from an enchanting evening, enjoy exquisite wine from the cellar, a collection worthy of an Oscar, featuring rare vintage editions including some gems from the Rothschild estate. Savour it on the plush sofas as you watch the breathtaking sunset.
Next up are the property’s luxurious amenities, including two stunning pools—one an awe-inspiring infinity pool—restaurant, ZAÏA, and a comprehensive well-being menu, featuring everything from tranquil yoga by the bay to indulgent spa treatments. There’s also a state-of-the-art gym and a wide array of activities bookable at reception or via WhatsApp, ranging from exhilarating golf and refined wine tasting to captivating day sails around the island.
We chose to explore the charming local town, escorted by attentive AETHOS drivers. For the adventurous, there’s the option of a scenic bike ride or driving a rental car; with private parking available for guests, Aethos offer guests unparalleled freedom to discover Sardinia’s majestic beauty at their own pace.
ZAÏA offers an array of mouthwatering options, but it’s the local fish—displayed on an impressive ice presentation—that truly steals the show. Drawing inspiration from Sardinia’s vibrant flavours, the chefs skillfully prepare dishes that invite guests to relish and celebrate the region’s abundant fresh produce, exceptional local wines, and rich culinary heritage. Star options on the menu include the extraordinary Hundred Octopus Legs, served with creamy cauliflower, crunchy hazelnuts, aromatic herbs, and vibrant local wild vegetables.
The succulent prawns are equally impressive, while those adventurous enough can indulge in the spectacular catch of the day, available salt-baked and paired with a tangy mustard tomato dressing. For meat lovers, the marbled entrecôte is irresistibly tender and bursting with flavour. Each table is presented with a basket of freshly baked bread upon arrival, and the wine list features selections from various regions. Opt for a local Sardinian wine as the knowledgeable server guides you through the exceptional offerings.
A stay at Aethos Sardinia is truly unforgettable. With its stunning views, unique property, and exquisite interior design, every moment is exceptional. But it’s the remarkable staff that makes it truly memorable. Though saying farewell was bittersweet, it feels more like a “see you soon” than a final goodbye.
